9 years ago, Europe saw more pedestrian fatalities per capita than did the US. Today, they have half as many per capita as we do stateside. In just one decade, Europe has dramatically reversed what many in the US see as just the cost of doing business. We can change it here too.

The pedestrian refuge is such an honest piece of infrastructure. It acknowledges a painted crosswalk wouldn't suffice because of the risk drivers pose, but also communicates a full signalled crossing (traffic lights) isn't feasible (for whatever reason). It's a gesture.
