This week in anatomy: how it started (muscle fatigue lab) vs how it ended (playdoh muscle identification).

Hey community members, this Thursday National Honor Society members are going trick-or-treating in Somerset, Thornville, and Glenford for our local food pantries! Members will be asking for canned goods and other non perishable items as they go door-to-door!

Biology students explored genetics and heredity with a “Build an Alien” activity. I love the creativity our students demonstrate!

Before DNA can be analyzed, it must be extracted or pulled out of the sample. Our Forensics students learned how to complete a DNA extraction procedure today!

“I think this is my favorite lab we’ve done all year” -a student. Protein Synthesis cookie decorating is always a hit! Students decide a DNA sequence to determine what ingredients to use to decorate their cookies.

Finished up a week of labs with superglue fuming for fingerprints. Students had the option to decorate their fingerprints and turn them into ornaments.

Our Forensic Science students got to choose to complete a Christmas (or winter themed) Crime Scene or an Evidence Board project for their midterm. I love how these projects let them show us their creativity and all they have learned so far!!

Sheridan alumna Latisha Pipes, who works as a Forensic Toxicologist at the OSHP, along with Sarah, a Drug Chemist shared their expertise with our students today. It’s always great for students to see that after graduating from Sheridan, they can go anywhere!

Thank you to the local American Legions, local fire and EMS, and the Perry County Sheriff’s Department for the moving Patriot’s Day ceremony. I feel so lucky to live and work in this community.

Monday was a lab day for all classes! General Biology explored Mendelian genetics with their Build an Alien lab; Forensic Science completed a fiber burn analysis to identify unknown fibers, and (not pictured) Anat/Phys continued their muscle dissections.

General Biology made candy DNA molecules and modeled the process of DNA replication.

Last week, students in Gen Bio practiced the process of protein synthesis through cookie decorating. They had a DNA code that they transcribed and translated into decorations or ingredients. What they did with those ingredients was up to them (see the 6-7 cookies).
