“Building roads to fix congestion is like a man trying to control his weight by letting out the waistband on his pants.” All you do is encourage more eating – or more driving. “If it worked, congestion would have been solved long ago.” - transport planner Janette Sadik-Khan.

This is a good article. I learned about how government works from Richard Shaw, and the points he makes are bang on the money rnz.co.nz/news/political…

Tui Mine in the Coromandel left a toxic contaminated site that taxpayers had to pay $20 million to clean up after the company walked away: envirohistorynz.com/2010/05/02/a-t… How many more like this will the fast-track process leave us? Luxon's #WarOnNature could cost us dearly. #nzpol

However, petrol prices rose by 12% from last year. This is a worry as petrol rises tend to lead future inflation. The faster we can transition to an electric vehicle fleet, and high-quality accessible public transport, the better. Which sadly is the opposite of what we are doing

A personal cartoon done after learning a friend has lost their job. If you think this cartoon is tasteless or brutal, well it’s got nothing on what the government is doing to real-life people. #nzpol #PublicServiceCuts

This week’s column: the intense focus on “17k extra public servants under Labour" is misguided b/c a) numbers have to be seen in context of wider workforce growth and b) most important q is not an abstract no. but what we need govt to do (and do better). thepost.co.nz/nz-news/350266…

Budget 2024 is out and it delivered tax cuts as promised in the election campaign. It was funded with spending cuts and increased borrowing. The spending relative to GDP is useful to understand. See thread below for the high level numbers.

Rising unemployment means more and more families struggling just to get by. The Government has no plan to keep people in work and are making life harder for unemployed people by attacking their right to access benefits. They are out of touch with the realities of working people.

I try to be constructive and measured in my criticism of Ministers so it truly pains me to say this, but the Prime Minister’s speech to local government just now was one of the most mana diminishing, paternalistic and visionless speeches to a group of people I have ever heard.

NZ National Party If you want to reduce gang membership, take up the recommendations of Whanaketia to prevent abuse in state care. Poverty, alienation & abuse lead to gangs. Policing gangs but not addressing the cause is like mopping up water but never turning off the tap, it’s a fool’s errand
