Two years ago, I received an unexpected msg from a woman called Jane, an adoptee from #Bangladesh, who wanted to learn more about where she was from. Jane was one of thousands of babies born to victims of rape during Bangladesh’s 1971 Liberation War. bit.ly/3RwUiqN

I was so fortunate to talk about pirates, witches, novels, and the real Hannah Masury with Alice Kemp-Habib for The Guardian. Thank you! #ATrueAccount #piratenovel theguardian.com/books/2023/nov…

This reminded me of what Pakistan did in Bangladesh. It also specifically targeted academics, Bengali intelligentsia, etc. I only found out fairly recently that the works of Tagore were banned too. It’s a way of annihilating a people so they can’t rebuild, reimagine and recreate.

Refugee Boy, Face, Gangsta Rap, Teacher’s Dead. There were three or four authors that really nurtured my love of reading as a child and Benjamin Zephaniah was one of them. RIP to a legend ❤️

My latest for Guardian culture. I spoke to the “mother of contemporary African dance” about developing her pioneering technique in post-independence Senegal + her duet with Malou Airaudo, which comes to Sadler's Wells this April

"[I don't know] if it’s even ethical to advise anyone to go into this industry any more" Wholeheartedly agree. I loved my journalism BA but the idea that there are students spending tens of thousands on the same course today, with 0 guarantee of work at the end of it, is 🤯

My interview with Kathryn Scanlan, winner of the Gordon Burn Prize, was published by Guardian Books on Fri. Kick The Latch really challenges the idea of what a novel could/should be. I loved reading it and really enjoyed writing this piece ⬇️
