This can be applied to reading to great effect. As readers, we take for granted the comprehension steps we go through to aid our understanding. If we model our thinking, this supports children by explicitly teaching them how comprehension works.

This. All of this. I've had students come into my reading class with fidget spinners, with stuffed animals, with fidget bracelets, shiny pens, etc. When asked why they have it, they all say they need it for their anxiety. So, initially, I always let them all come in with it

Highlight of the working week: the Y7 student who showed me a book full of her mum’s drawings from her younger days….and then the student’s drawings in the second half of the same book. It was lovely to see the artistic closeness between mum and daughter 😌

Yes to all this. Let’s include free choice as well. Children should be allowed to choose what they enjoy. My job is to tap into those interests and suggest books they’ll hopefully love.

This is a golden age of children's literature. There are books being published today that will shape the minds of generations; life-changing books whose readers will change the world. There really is a book for EVERYONE now - if we can just help every reader find those books!

What a wonderful day in the glorious city of Liverpool, finishing off with a delicious afternoon tea at The Municipal Hotel and Spa.

The incomparable Sophie Kinsella What a huge loss to the writing and reading community. You made me laugh out loud so much that I daren’t read your books in public spaces. Thinking of your family. Rest in peace, lovely lady
