Yesterday, on the way from from the beach my nine year old said to me, ‘the sea is empty and all the water is here’ and parenting’s a long game but truly that was one of my prouder moments. (Also yes I realise it could use some workshopping. Let me have it.)

Like Lauren Oyler, I also find the concept of plot oppressive. BUT THAT’S THE POINT. It gives you something to work around, do battle with, sharpen yourself on. You don’t simply dispense with it. Or use it as some strange point scoring exercise evidencing your superior intellect.

Watched Godland slowly over the last few days. A perfect film, insane cinematography, shades of Bergman yet completely its own. Feel a bit lost now it’s finished.
