"There will be good reasons for this" - no there aren't. No other NATO military shows such disdain for oversight from their legislature and the Fourth Estate, and few inside the military in the UK have tied up their lack of engagement with the public's complete "meh" for defence

Okay I read the MIT "Your Brain on ChatGPT" preprint. (well, it's 140 pages long, so I read about 1/3 of it and skimmed the boring parts) Here are my takeaways: 🧵

How many carriers will be deployed? Vinson has been deployed for 7 months now and currently operating in CENTCOM, and Nimitz is en route. Assuming the max is 9 months (based on Ike's historic deployment), that’s another 4-6 weeks of availability (considering the transit back).

Around 100 mid-air refuellings a day so far, with a fleet of 7 tankers. The logistics of this air campaign are mammoth Wonder how soon pilot fatigue at this tempo becomes an issue? No surprise 🇺🇸 flew across a bunch more tankers

🗺️ I've spent a lot of time the past week looking at data in the Strait of Hormuz so here is a quick animation showcasing the sheer volume of activity in the Persian Gulf last Friday. The data highlights "Tanker" only vessels (AIS code 80-89) #map #3d #dataviz

After online allegations that the sub is "deformed," the shipbuilder had to issue a press release explaining that the bumps are ranging sonars. Then some continue to criticise the outer hull being not smooth, though this is not uncommon among naval vessels. Truth is (1/3)

Spain threatens to derail Nato summit over Trump defence target - a piece about one of the most significant NATO free riders (Spain) and the rather surprisingly reasonable idea to streamline a meeting that needn’t last 3 days to a couple of hours. on.ft.com/461NmZS

There is a problematic assumption here: that UK universities cannot rest on their laurels. That is simply not the case. But being a top researcher is getting incredibly harder because of bureaucracies, larger nos of students, and ideological politics. on.ft.com/4n9Kal5

Tanker rates double as shipowners steer clear of Strait of Hormuz - yup. A five day transit for a high value target is not something you can insure against. Not with such a shifting ground. on.ft.com/4jWdWa8
