It put you at your ease.
First time I tried it was on meeting former Olympian Kriss Akabusi.
Holding out my hand I said:

Once I was on a train and I could see quite far up the aisle. There was a kid coming down it, aged about 14. Eventually he arrived in front of me. He stared at my face for a few seconds and then said: ‘Nah, that’s not James May.’ Then he turned around and went all the way back.

Took the kids to England v Brazil.
During the 2nd half the bloke next to me said:
Excuse me, can I ask you a question?
Yes
Are you James May?
No
Are you sure?
Yes
Positive?
Yes
Oh, ok.
