It all started in 1978 when Decatur, Alabama purchased a hot air balloon. A few years later, well-known local pilots decided to create a competition for balloonists from the surrounding area, and the Alabama Jubilee Hot Air Balloon Classic was born! 📸: Marshall Lee Gower.

Why create a festival around a legume? When boll weevils destroyed the Wiregrass's cotton crops, the peanut helped communities - including City of Dothan - get back on their feet. The first National Peanut Festival was held in 1938 to celebrate. 📸: Luke Lawson.
