Most stories about scholarly migration focus on the international dimension. But once you consider local flows, no country is "universally attractive." This new PNAS paper by Akbaritabar et al. comes with a dataset on regional level scholarly migration to flesh out those flows.

Even if your country attracts a lot of talent, your local region may not! Really interesting study in PNAS contrasting the movement of scientists within vs. across countries. Understanding this is essential because the movement of scientists is essential to innovation, business

Very proud of this work by Faeze Ghorbanpour Thiago Zordan Malaguth and me, which addresses the left censoring issues in migration research that uses digital trace data. It will appear in the proceedings of #ICWSM2025. Faeze is going to present it there. doi.org/10.48550/arXiv…

Internal migration of researchers matters as much as the international kind, yet we lack data until now. Their global database shows that domestic hubs poach talent from neighboring regions, redrawing the innovation map beneath national-level statistics. pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pn…

📄We show how adding nationality (via language models) can transform migration studies, helping distinguish emigration vs. return migration. 🇺🇸➡️🇨🇳 Literature reports high US→China emigration using academic origin. But with name origin, ~48% are return migrants (vs. 33%).📊

📝Excited to share my new publication with Emilio Zagheni and Helga de Valk in PNASNews where we look at gravity-type models for migration prediction. Our results suggest that ignoring gender makes these models less reliable⬇️ pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pn… #migration #gender #modeling
