What's the fate of N co-applied with P as ammonium phosphates? Here, we show that fall-applied MAP and DAP N is lost over the ensuring months. TSP avoids these N losses: a "right source" in the 4Rs. 33P radiolabelling ammonium phosphate fertilizers reveals majority (78%–92%) of early growth (V7) corn P is soil-derived. Higher PUE for MAP (4.9%) than struvite (1.9%), though no difference in corn biomass. bsssjournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/ej…

Vertical (paleo)soil chronosequences offer an alternative to traditional space-for-time substitutions to test the Walker-Syers model of terrestrial P cycling. Our proof of concept from the glaciated landscapes of central North America using a 450k yr core: doi.org/10.1016/j.scit…

A big challenge of phosphorus fertility is that we can't always differentiate where fertilizer P molecules go. This study helps us to actually track the fate of fertilizer P into the plant. tl;dr early season plant P isn't derived from fertilizer, but from existing soil P pools

To what extent do calculated P balances reflect measured soil P stocks? After 145 years of crop rotation x fertilization , (i) +P balances > measured P stock differences, (ii) legacy P found across diverse fractions, (iii) P changes decoupled by depth doi.org/10.1111/ejss.7…

Strategies to quantify and reduce N2O emissions from crops focus on N fertilizer management. Here we show that ~40% of N2O emissions from the most extensive cropping system in North America (maize/soybean rot) occur during the unfertilized soybean phase rdcu.be/dY9Hf .

Do soil enzyme activity assays need buffers? No. Building on previous work, we find buffers (i) *suppress* activity of phosphatase and (ii) alter apparent kinetic properties relative to water. doi.org/10.1016/j.soil… With Skye & soils & JordonWade.bsky.social Natural Resources Conservation Service Soil Health Institute

Long-term (>100 yr) experiments offer valuable insights to soil change under ag practices, but were designed before modern stats. How to navigate experimental design issues? Here we showcase an approach using the Morrow Plots in year 145 for SOC stocks: acsess.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/ae…
