#stem4all #ISTESTEM INTRO Joseph Kleinmann. Highland NY at my dining room table b/c I had to evacuate my office so maintenance could repair a water-damaged wall resulting from a roof leak, channeling Dr. Emmett Lathrop "Doc" Brown. Hi all.

A1 #stem4all #ISTESTEM The physics lab section I supervise is modern with respect to the experiments and instrumentation we use. Several labs ago we introduced a modified flopped-classroom approach to which our students are increasingly responding. We'll see.

A2 #stem4all #ISTESTEM Our physics lab has a student-choice 3 week project with a 'scientific society' presentation as the culminating activity. Proposals range from sliding down a hill in a cardboard box to study grass friction to analyzing the dynamics of a high-bar dismount.

A3 #stem4all #ISTESTEM I guess by being ornery when I 'help' during lab and respond to their lab reports and lab notebooks. Some of my standard comments are: Why? Why not? What do you think? Why do you think? Is there a pattern? How come? What if? How could you...? They hate me.

#istestem A8 Sorry to be cynical- to get your people on board just point out that the competitor school district down the road is planning to do this or is already doing this. Sympathetic media may help by writing articles about the latest STEM movements in districts in the area

A1 #k12artchat The ability to recognize the elements of art; to use the elements to read a piece of art (performance, graphic, music, or ...); and to arrange the elements to create new art.

A2 #k12artchat A space where you create, where you have the resources to create, and where you have an audience to respond to–and interact with–what you created

Aaron Jos Kleinmann (@ajkleinmann) 's Twitter Profile Photo

A3 #k12artchat Learning to understand and speak (= create with) a new language (art literacy + STEAM or STEM) and a place (Makerspace) in which to successfully do it.

A4 #k12artchat Decide on 3-5 elements of literacy you want students to learn (e.g., hue, saturation, intensity with respect to color; pitch, duration, harmonics w.r.t. music, etc). Have available 'pure' examples of each students can use to explore. more...

A4 continued #k12artchat Have students respond to a six-word story (or something similar) using the 'literacy words' that just learned. Have students read each others stories and explain what they think they mean.

A5 #k12artchat Growth mindset (Carol Dweck). There's no fanatic like a convert, but do read and internalize her writing. From a growth mindset and non-critical direction, students can discover and develop the skills that they determine they need for what they decide to do.

#ISTEstem Considering the implications built into the formulas would be an interesting extension. Slight differences in weighting can lead to major differences in ranking. One can also ask why the formulas are built as they are.

A2 #ISTEstem To help students develop visual literacy we can paste IMAGES into Google Docs and ask students to describe what they see and what it means to them and might mean to others.

A3 #ISTEstem I guess I'm a tool nerd. When a few dollars are burning a hole in my pocket and no one is watching, I'm just as likely to pick up a tool or three 'just because' than because I have a specific purpose. Why? I guess I'm creating my own Makerspace 'just in case.'
