Benches have cleared in L.A., after Fernando Tatis Jr. was plunked for the third time in nine days by a Dodgers pitcher. Mike Shildt ran to Tatis at home plate, while yelling at Dave Roberts in the Dodger dugout. Roberts ran out to confront Shildt. Lots of pushing and shoving.

Now Robert Suarez has been ejected for plunking Shohei Ohtani with two outs in the ninth, which brings the tying run to the plate with the Padres nearly out of relievers. Yuki Matsui on for what would be his first career save.

Final: Padres 5, Dodgers 3 Padres win the finale. And an eventful finale it was. Fernando Tatis Jr. and Shohei Ohtani were plunked within the same inning for the second time this week. Benches cleared. Shildt, Roberts and Suarez were tossed. Also, Xander Bogaerts went 4-for-4.

Mike Shildt called out the number of times Tatis has been hit by LA (6, which is two more than any other team) as the reason for his ire toward Roberts in the ninth. “Enough’s enough,” he said. “Intentional, unintentional, the fact of the matter is I took exception with it.”

Manny Machado: “They need to set a little candle up for Tati tomorrow and hope that everything comes back negative.” Yes, the “they” he was referring to was the Dodgers.

Initial X-rays on Tatis' right hand were negative. There's some inflammation, obviously. He will undergo additional imaging -- a CT scan and an MRI -- to confirm those results tomorrow, the Padres said.

The Padres and Dodgers just played seven games in the span of 11 days. Now they’ve got beef. With these two teams, did you honestly expect anything else? mlb.com/news/padres-do…

Robert Suarez spoke with reporters in SD about last night’s HBP/ejection “It wasn’t intentional,” he said through an interpreter. “That decision was made by the umpires. I knew there was a warning issued to both clubs. But I obviously wasn’t trying to hit him in that situation.”

Robert Suarez has been handed a three-game suspension for hitting Shohei Ohtani last night. He will appeal it, after saying today that it wasn’t intentional. Mike Shildt has also been suspended a game. He will serve it tonight. Dave Roberts gets a one-game ban as well.

Mike Shildt says the Padres are optimistic Suarez’s suspension can be reduced by appeal, though not rescinded. He maintained Suarez didn’t throw at Ohtani intentionally, a claim the Dodgers obviously disagreed with last night.

Xander Bogaerts caught stealing for the first time this season. (Perfect throw from Salvador Perez nabbed Bogaerts by an inch.) Most Padres SBs before being caught to start season: 1. Everth Cabrera, 2012: 24 2. Justin Upton, 2015: 16 3. Manuel Margot, 2019: 15 4. Bogaerts, 13

Jonathan India takes Nick Pivetta deep, which is excusable enough -- a fastball that didn't get far enough in, and India hit it out. But Pivetta had started the inning by walking the 7 and 8 hitters. So it's a three-run shot, and the Royals now lead 4-0.
