In today's Times, Simon Jenkins launches an attack on the plans for a new town at Tempsford. Even by his own lofty standards, it is excruciatingly error-filled. Strap in for the ride, folks. (1/?)

Economists: people don't understand marginal tax. If your tax rate increases above £100,000, you don't suddenly lose money when you earn £100,001 UK tax system: hold my beer

This from Martin F. Robbins on the HS2 access track is utterly maddening, but reflects a key flaw in the planning system - councillors pay absolutely no personal cost for spurious decisions, even when they know they will lose on appeal and cost taxpayers huge amounts in the process

Like everything ⁦John Burn-Murdoch⁩ makes, this chart is amazing. The sharp decline in conscientiousness and rise in neuroticism among young people is astonishing. But also of note: literally every age group has gotten less extroverted in the age of the smartphone

We think of the British state as a juggernaut. But in many ways, it's often terrifyingly ramshackle - and as I say in The Times and The Sunday Times today, the govt's new announcements on business regulation are the perfect case in point. Nerdy but important thread. (1/?)
