It has been a busy start to 2024! We were honored to present what we do and our potential solutions for the South China Sea at their Regional Exchange event in January 2024.

We presented about some of the key challenges in applying computer vision and AI to problems in commercial fishing at the Global AI in Fisheries Monitoring Summit in Hawaii.

Our University of Hawaii capstone intern team are hard at work examining how we can improve the process of assembling datasets from our extensive annotation library. Managing millions of annotations brings about its own challenges in big data.

For the past few weeks we were getting to know everything we could about AIS data and the prediction of fishing effort at scale. We love expanding our team’s skillsets into new areas.

Next up our AI team is focusing on side scan sonar images for a ghost gear project and we are getting ready to analyze the results of our first trips running at the Edge in Costa Rica.

One challenge with object classification in fishing is that we typically see target species objects in the video for about 5 to 20 frames, while non-target species will be present for fewer than 4 frames. Designing approaches for non-target species is one of our research areas.

Are you working in the location or collection of ghost gear? We have recently completed some preliminary work examining the application of AI to side scan sonar imagery and are interested to gather insights into what onboard analytics would be useful to recovery teams.

A reminder that we are still looking for short video clips and still imagery of ETP (endangered, threatened, or protected species) within tuna fishing for our current research into the detection of these interactions by AI in EM video. Reach out if you have footage you can share!
