This has been an extraordinarily hard year for science both globally, and especially in the United States. In this week’s Talking Climate, I unpack why recent cuts to scientific programs and data don’t only affect climate research in the U.S. They weaken the knowledge

The lake ice is following that mean curve pretty well so far! But one thing we know about our changing climate is that variability is increasing, both inter- and intra- annually. It will be interesting to see how the rest of the ice season goes!

very cool: a telecom cable on the bottom of Lake Ontario was used to monitor waves, highlighting "implications for coastal hazards, ecosystem dynamics, and wave-energy development". A game-changer for #GreatLakes observing systems? nature.com/articles/s4324…

Square waves formed on Lake Michigan off the Indiana coast as two swells crossed paths, creating a rare gridlike pattern on the water. 🌊

A powerful and comprehensive picture of just how thoroughly US science is being hollowed out. As I say here, “the operation of science has been fundamentally altered. We’re going to see the repercussions of this for years.” nature.com/articles/d4158…

Truly a beautiful show from our atmosphere! Here is a full 21-hour animation of the Lake Michigan snow mesovortex train that happened yesterday into early this morning! One of my most favorite things to catch on radar, the atmosphere is really showing off its stuff here.
