I’m so happy to see this Jane. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your incredibly kind words. It does make a huge difference and it comes at the right time. Confidence & self belief fluctuate but you have helped to restore them 🙂

This remember not to punish yourselves for what happened when you were struggling with your mental health. Be kind to yourselves. I discuss this in my book Breakthrough: A Story of Hope, Resilience and Mental Health Recovery amzn.eu/d/dydKA9K

We MUST reject stigma & breakdown barriers. To be clear, living with a mental health condition is nothing to be ashamed about. I discuss this & more in this Hyphen interview & in my book Breakthrough. A Story of Hope, Resilience and Mental Health Recovery amzn.eu/d/cM45Jt1

2% of Gaza’s population have been exterminated, in just 7 months.

The equivalent of killing 1.3 million UK citizens or 6.5 million Americans.

But no, definitely not a Genocide.

Professor Ahmed Hankir Despite battling cancer, some become oncologists.
Even with TB, one can specialize in chest care.
Physical disabilities don't hinder orthopedic surgery.
So, why can't someone with mental health history be a psychiatrist?

I am proud of you for defying all odds.

Professor Ahmed Hankir I know a psychiatrist who suffers from OCD which requires medication. He's a more effective and compassionate doctor because of it. He can truly relate to what his patients endure and can treat them accordingly.

Professor Ahmed Hankir I can't imagine how his reaction made you feel, especially at such a vulnerable time. Thank goodness you didn't listen in the long run, even though it must have felt like a dagger through the heart when it was said.

It's slowly becoming understood that we are more empathetic…

True story…

I was forced to interrupt medical school due to a devastating mental health condition that very nearly ended me. During my recovery, I attended an event & asked the speaker who was a consultant psychiatrist if I, too, could one day become a consultant psychiatrist…

Professor Ahmed Hankir The Book Publicist Capstone Books Absolutely! The pleasure is mine. I believe strongly that society's mindset toward mental health still has a way to go. Too many are still suffering alone and are ostracized by their peers.

Thank you Peta. I do think psychiatrists & other mental healthcare professionals who themselves have experienced mental health difficulties can draw on both our personal & professional experiences for the benefit of our patients. I mention this in my book .

Absolutely. I don’t think psychiatry talks about how classism & being underprivileged impact mental health enough. Moreover, persons from low income backgrounds are underrepresented in psychiatry even though the profession should reflect the diverse communities we serve.
