We have pushed Alden to address the pay inequities in our newsroom. We asked that women and journalists of color receive the same pay as white and/or male counterparts. Asking the company to follow the law is not an unreasonable demand. Alden refused. chicagotribuneguild.com/paystudy

Or come lend support in person. We’ll rally outside the Tribune Freedom Center from 9 to 12 tomorrow. Alden received $150 million to move the printing centers out of Chicago for a casino to be built. Alden is making money. They just don’t want to share it with journalists.

We don’t relish walking out. We love our jobs and know readers count on us. But Alden Global Capital is killing papers like the Trib. After 5 years of bargaining and an ever-shrinking newsroom, it’s time to fight back harder than we ever have in the paper’s history.

The Chicago Tribune is an institution and it is every worker in its newsroom that makes the paper run and contributes to that legacy.   I stand in solidarity with the Tribune staff at Chicago Tribune Guild as they fight for a fair contract.

Senior reporter Laura Rodriguez decided to strike because she knows journalists of color deserve to be paid as much as their counterparts here Chicago Tribune. “I’m ready to escalate because our company won’t even acknowledge that.” — Laura N. Rodríguez Presa

Lifestyles Editor Saleema Syed went on strike because she has lost money with no raises & inflation over her 23 years here Chicago Tribune. “I am ready to escalate because... I need to be able to help my daughter through college while also being able to retire.” — Saleema Syed

Alden is making obscene money; we want fair wages to fight inflation, recognize our efforts to provide watchdog journalism and bring fairness to the gender, ethnic and racial disparities in pay. Alden needs to stop being stupid. Don't cut healthcare. Protect seniority.

Many feelings today. I’m angry it had to come to this, but so grateful for these kickass, brave journalists who are unconscionably paid less than their peers and are demanding things change for younger/future generations of women + people of color in the Chicago Tribune newsroom.

Chicago was founded by a Haitian. So when Trump brought up the false claim in a debate earlier this month that Haitian immigrants are stealing pets to eat, Chef Daniel Aurel of Lior's Cafe called the rhetoric upsetting.
