My best shot of the and the local area (Ohio) during totality. We were lucky enough to see the 2017 eclipse, as well.

Not to 'eclipse' what's happening today but - how did the art of eclipse photography begin? 🌑

That question is answered by AFLCMC's own chief historian Kevin Rusnak: bit.ly/4ansJa6

Happy Publication Day to Brian Laslie and his latest book 'Fighting from Above: A Combat History of the US Air Force'! oupress.com/9780806193670/

The story of the United States Air Force (USAF) stretches back to aerial operations prior to the First World War—well before the USAF

My son started playing the Helldivers 2 video game, based very much on “Starship Troopers” the movie, so we just watched it together. Whatever its faults (the satire is awesome), the military tactics are atrocious. No air support, combined arms, explosives, gunships, etc.

Thoughts on Masters of the Air?
I’ve been checking out the criticism & much of it is “they didn’t tell story X, y, or z.” I’m not going to fault a show for what they couldn’t squeeze in (no R&D or acquisition?! No homefront?!), but on its own merits.

Cringe moment: I was giving a tour of National Museum USAF for “emerging leaders” from Wright State University (Dayton, OH) & some faculty. I was talking about the Cold War & asked how many remembered it.
No one.
Then I asked who was alive during the Cold War.
No one. 😣

I just added this to my reading list. The summary is intriguing because of the interplay of technology development, acquisition, doctrine, & culture. This (precision) is a concept that I’ve been attuned to since I read Mackenzie’s “Inventing Accuracy” as a grad student.

If you’ve followed me for a while, you know I’ve put a lot out there about US work on aircraft turbos Maj Lawrence W. McIntosh (now Air Force Research Lab - AFRL ). It’s a great case of: does technology enable doctrine or doctrine drive technology? Arguably turbos enabled American strategic bombing in WWII

To connect & the “reoptimization” announcement from U.S. Air Force leadership this week:

The subject of this article is Hans von Ohain. Sound familiar? He’s the grandson of the more famous Hans, German inventor of the 1st jet engine to fly (1939), came to the US after WWII in Operation Paperclip, & retired from Air Force Research Lab - AFRL

Big changes have been announced to the Air Force’s organizational structure as part of its “re-optimization.”
