2 | Public Image Limited - Metal Box
The pinnacle of post-punk invention. Three 12' discs in a tin with no track listings so you don't know what you are playing. The music is equally dense. Joycean lyrics, huge bass & the world's greatest guitarist at play.

3 | Mott the Hoople - Brain Capers
Mott's last album before Bowie led them to fame is a melting pot of dying hope, desperation & rage. Producer Guy Stevens even set fire to the studio during recording to force a reaction. Mott delivered. Unique and powerful.

4 | Throwing Muses - Throwing Muses
As with everything on 4AD, I bought this LP on the day of release not knowing anything about the band. It took three tracks before I realised it was the record I had been waiting to hear all my life. If you get it, you know.

5 | The Boys Next Door - The Birthday Party
I've seen some electrifying bands, but nothing ever matched The Birthday Party. They were dangerous and extreme. Their first album, released when the band was known as The Boys Next Door, captures that intensity.

6 | The Cure - Faith
The Cure were local boys to us, so we identified with them from their beginnings. Though we loved Three Imaginary Boys and Seventeen Seconds, it was the gothic desolation of Faith that captivated us the most. Nothing has ever matched it.

7 | Cranes - Forever
Cranes are the only band who capture life itself in sound. ‘Forever’ floors me with its contrast between sensitivity and blankness, surrender and attack, delicacy and brutality. An achingly beautiful, but hopelessly human album.

8 | Cockney Rebel - The Psychomodo
Still reeling from the death of Mr. Harley just before the 50th anniversary of his masterpiece. It's an LP that has been an ever-present on my turntable since then; a rock album with a unique perspective and, oddly, no guitars
