When UC campuses were becoming hubs of activism in the 60s, then Governor Ronald Reagan’s aid advised him to “Make them pay. Put them in debt. They’ll quiet down.” He obliged. Tuition hikes and the student debt crisis were spurred intentionally as tools of political repression.

I just drove by a retirement community in Baltimore. Residents are gathered outside wearing keffiyehs, waving Palestinian flags. Not a huge crowd but out of frame they stretch the block. Heartwarming!

UCL is the alma mater of the late poet and academic Refaat Alareer.

Students at UCL held a thirty four day occupation in memory of Refaat and against the university’s links to the occupation.

Refaat Alareer wrote a poem called “If I Die,” asking people to fly a kite in his name if he’s killed to give hope to orphaned children.

He wrote it for his daughter, Shaima.

Israel killed him. Months later Shaima had a baby.

Israel killed Shaima.

And her husband and baby.
