I'm reminded of my field man from the coop. (God rest his soul) He stuck around through management changes and a bunch of nonsense the last few years. Retired in February, was diagnosed with aggressive cancer a few months later and was dead by Christmas. 😪

Other products come and go. There is substitution, there is shrinkflation. Only one product can be tracked reliably over time to measure inflation at the grocery store. The consistency of Campbell's Tomato Soup as a product over the 128 years it has been available for consumers

Gary is missing the larger and more insidious dynamic, either unintentionally or on purpose. If, today, I could earn a dollar and bury it in a coffee can in the backyard, certain it would be a dollar in 50 years for my great-great-grandchildren yet unborn, the *I* get to make

Earl Butz was a symptom, not a cause. An entire generation of enthusiastic young people at the time were excited at the prospect of "feeding the world." We're now at the end of that cycle. If you're young, better take a long look into the future, because it won't be the same.

Nice thread of responses here. It makes me wonder with land at ATH, rental rates where they are, a demographic cliff heading our way in the next decade, and grain farming looking tough for the foreseeable future.......... Is the top in? Do treasuries make more sense?

It's increasingly looking like NOT following the rules is the likely choice for the younger generations. Can't even get access to a mainstream milk market in a lot of places & can't sell fresh products to neighbors without permits/approvals. What's the incentive going on be?

The only issue I will point out is the desire for solutions is a chicken and egg problem. Until it gets bad enough, none of the "solutions" will be palatable to a plurality of people. One side must win. It's evident throughout history that humans never change until forced.

In a one mile radius of my home, there is only one other family with kids. 5- have older/retired couples without kids at home. 7- widows/widowers on the older end 3- single bachelors -mostly old never married 1- being renovated/undetermined (was owned by 80 y/o woman) 1-Airbnb

Pull farm supports, ad hoc payments, snap benefits, things like government subsidized financing and we'd find out real quick the true value of just about everything.......

This gets to the heart of what "efficiency" means and what that efficiency is to be used for. Most people only describe "economic efficiency. " We have become incredibly "efficient" at hitting the wrong target in a lot of cases. What would a more "effective" ag model look like?

Adam Lasch I think about this a lot. I think some in AG need to take 1 step back off efficiency and convenience for the wholism of their lives. I.E. keep a little manual labor in the routine to stay healthy and not have to go to the gym. No trip to the gym means more time with family

To understand the horrors of this world rightly is not to explain them away, but to look at them honestly and still refuse to shrink God down to their size. Evil is not evidence that God is small or out of control. It is evidence that the world is fallen. The Bible never pretends

An ounce of silver is now worth more than a barrel of oil😳 That has only happened once before, for a brief moment in the late 1970s (chart source: macrotrends)

Some harsh truths for those who choose not to have kids: 1. Taking that one extra 5 day vacation more than me each year doesn't come close to the joy of coaching your kid in sports, seeing them open xmas presents, their 'i love yous' each day 2. A dog is not a 'kid' nor is
