Great sponsored sessions today at #ICVM2023, including "Long in the Tooth: New insights into functional morphology of hypertrophied canines" which will become an AR Special Issue edited by Adam Hartstone-Rose, Dr Tahlia Pollock & Lars Werdelin.

Now that #ICVM2023 is a wrap, I’m taking a moment to reflect on International Society for Vertebrate Morphology’s exceptionally collegial culture. It’s wonderful to see such a supportive community that appreciates the diversity of systems, questions and approaches, 1/2

Carolina Tiger Rescue contributes to research conducted by NC State University professor Dr. Adam Hartstone-Rose and team, including lead author and former animal care intern Lara Martens. Amazing work that proves why declawing big cats is an objectively cruel practice: news.ncsu.edu/2023/07/why-yo…

Did Smilodon roar? Check out our new paper in which PhD student Ashley Deutsch led an analysis of felid hyoid bones from La Brea Tar Pits and compared them to modern purring and roaring cats with surprising results! Journal of Morphology onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.10…

Inspired by this study, I've created a "paleo-soundscape" where a Smilodon fatalis proclaims his territory at the break of dawn. This is simply one of many interpretations of the study's results; I found myself referencing puma and ocelot vocalizations. Hope you enjoy it!

Visualizing lemur masticatory muscle fascicles in 3D space in the largest comparative study of primate anatomy using DiceCT. Fascicle properties reveal adaptation to diverse diets, hinting at evolutionary flexibility. Dickinson, Adam Hartstone-Rose et al.: doi.org/10.1002/ar.253…
