Carey Stapleton and I have a new paper in Political Research Quarterly. We show that political elites use angry rhetoric to increase levels of aversive emotions among in-group partisans, which increases engagement. But, it has no significant impact on out-group partisans. journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/10…

Sad to see Simone Biles not competing and hoping for a quick recovery for her. IMO being so good they change the rules to stop you is way cooler than winning gold. Gold is great, but only the GOAT breaks the judges.

#poliscitwitter I’m looking for recent work on interest group effects - broadly defined - to update an MA syllabus. I know I’ve seen some great work on here recently but can’t find it all. Any ideas? Self promotion encouraged!

WHAT MOST PEOPLE THINK OF AS DOWNS’ MEDIAN VOTER MODEL IS ACTUALLY HIS SUMMARY OF HOTELLING’S MODEL. DOWNS ACCOUNTS FOR THE DISTRIBUTION OF VOTERS BUT WHAT’S EVEN MORE INTERESTING IS HIS DISCUSSION OF THE ORIGINS OF PARTIES AND IDEOLOGIES, AND HOW THEY STEM FROM VOTER CONFUSION

A worrying development in our democracies today is that many of us are willing to accept undemocratic behavior by politicians if we agree with them politically. In my new American Political Science Review article, I scrutinize the perceptual logic behind such behavior in the US & globally.🧵👇🏾

This is not the contradiction it seems. Because grocery stores can’t sell wine there is a liquor store beside every single grocery store in Colorado with a great wine and beer selection. Coloradans didn’t vote against wine they voted FOR liquor stores

for Democrats in Congress, immigration is a distributive issue driven by geographically concentrated foreign born populations but for Republicans, it is a partisan issue that is less connected to geography onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.111…
