Was very lucky to enthuse about this Joan Carlile Burghley today for the Sotheby's Institute - a picture that usually hangs in the family’s private quarters but brought down for us to admire closely. A real treat.

Here’s another missing (and previously misattributed) head study by Mary Beale (1633-1699) of one of her sons. It was last recorded in Paris, I wonder where it is now.

An unrecorded and hauntingly direct portrait of Charles Beale, by his wife Mary Beale, which sold misattributed at Koller in 2007. Executed on bed ticking, a cheaply found canvas alternative, I wonder where it is now!
