The cool thing about proving a theorem is that you made a permanent contribution to humanity. But will it be useful, who knows? The cool thing about empirical work is that you make an immediately relevant contribution to humanity. But will it last forever, who cares?

PhD student progression. Phase I: I tried your idea and it didn't work. Phase II: And this is why it didn't work. Phase III: And so I came up with my own idea. Phase IV: I changed the problem slightly, it's actually more practical, and I have an idea to solve it.

Teaching a PhD seminar this fall on contextual and fair optimization. Feel free to suggest 1 or 2 papers (especially your own) to put on the reading list.

Finding and selecting good reviewers is probably the most important task as an editor. I'm proud that I've had over 100 reviewers without asking anyone more than once (yet). If you want to be more involved with reviewing, just reach out to (associate) editors and tell them!

The phrase "Edits become suggestions" for "Reviewing" is confusing. The edits seem to actually change the LaTeX/pdf directly, so they are not quite suggestions. I think "Edits are tracked" would make more sense.
