Support students by listening to them. Don’t always try to brush them off or “problem solve” right away. Support students by sharing YOUR daily struggles and life stressors. Tell them things won’t always be picture perfect, but there will always be people who care. #EdChatPH

A3: Greeting students in the hallways before class. Zones of Regulation and Second Step Programs. Any time I can explicitly teach “life lessons” like how people get stressed out when tech doesn’t work (and Ss should be quiet) or how everyone fights personal battles, I go for it. #edchatPH

A3: Lamps instead of fluorescent lighting, practice mindfulness/meditation, classical music, less screen time. #EdChatPH

If we were to gather all of these great answers, we would have written a book, collectively so far tonight! Follow each other...please! #edchatPH

A4: I try to talk with students about brain science. Our brains are designed to keep us safe and track danger in our environments. Of course we feel stressed and anxious, but what CAN we control and do about it? That’s where Zones of Regulation comes in for SEL and toolkits. #edchatPH

Bonus: Keep talking about it! Share self care articles. Teach about #SEL. Have parents read with their children or spend time together instead of slaving over homework at the dinner table. #edchatPH

Thinking of your child behaving badly disposes you to think of punishment. Thinking of your child as struggling to handle something difficult encourages you to help them through their distress. #SEL #behavior The Gottman Institute

Just ran off copies at the printer for a vocabulary quiz. Needed 94 copies. Without counting, I PLACED 94 PIECES OF PAPER IN THE COPIER. I've peaked for the week at 7:16 on Monday.

Holding students accountable and demonstrating compassion are not incompatible notions. You can always extend grace while you provide discipline. You can always respect their dignity while you administer consequences.

Kids pick up on more than we realize. They will notice our mood… whether it’s a good one or a bad one. And they will notice our example… whether it’s a good one or a bad one.

Refreshing to take a step back and really analyze how we use tech in schools and what the research states. Plus I also love Bitmojis. #whatifimwrong @MrKlinge #MWGS

“Staff members who stay positive are not ‘Pollyanna,’ naive, or looking through ‘rose-tinted glasses.’ They are simply committed to remaining constructive...they do not complain about the challenges, they look for solutions.” Solid book!
