Abortion bans are dangerous. “Banning abortion and tying providers’ hands impacts every aspect of care and will do so for years to come,” says Dr. Daniel Grossman.“Pregnant people deserve better than regressive policies that put their health and lives at risk.” truthout.org/articles/new-r…

Ibis recently published a brief highlighting the safety, effectiveness, and experiences of misoprostol-only #MedicationAbortion regimens, which are endorsed by the World Health Organization (WHO) and used widely (and successfully) around the world: bit.ly/3CvzyHr #IbisDrivesChange

Even before Dobbs, only about two-thirds of OB-GYN residency programs routinely trained their residents in abortion care. Now even fewer residency programs teach abortion care. Both patients and providers are suffering the consequences [a thread 🧵]

We’ve heard countless stories about women almost dying when hospitals denied them emergency abortions. But we’re not grappling with the thousands of people unable to get abortions and forced to give birth. Those are also horror stories. Me in Jezebel jezebel.com/after-roe-abor…

The Care Post-Roe research team received 50 submissions detailing cases of medical care that deviated from the standard due to laws restricting abortion. Here's a devastating glimpse at how abortion bans are harming both patients & providers, one year post-Roe. [a thread 🧵]

🧵 The best way to concretely support abortion access a year after #RoevWade was overturned is still the same as it was before Dobbs — support the organizations that are providing direct services. Six orgs that actually help folks access abortion care and need more support:

It has been a long year. On the year marker of the #Dobbs decision we are holding our community of fierce abortion providers, allies & advocates close. We all need each other to keep going. We need all of us. Here’s what we at PRH are going to do in the year to come 🧵:

As a doctor in California, I know there is more I could do to help patients across the country who need care if only our legal system allowed me to do so. I wrote about what we can do to offer abortion care across state lines for MedPage Today: medpagetoday.com/opinion/second…

Abortion bans harm not only individual patients but also entire communities by driving away physicians who can no longer provide the full range of evidence-based ob-gyn care. Read more about Dr. Zahedi-Spung’s difficult decision to leave Tennessee: acog.org/news/news-arti…

For @NYTOpinion, I wrote about last week’s approval by FDA for Opill, the first over-the-counter daily contraceptive. It’s a big deal, both for contraceptive access and for the integrity of science in public policy. nytimes.com/2023/07/19/opi…

We stand in solidarity with the Nebraskan mother & daughter who were criminalized for an alleged self-managed abortion and are facing sentencing today. Self-managed abortion is not a crime in Nebraska, and neither is losing a pregnancy for any reason.

This case is horrific. A teenager is going to jail for accessing healthcare to end her pregnancy, and her mother also faces charges. Self-managed abortion is not illegal in Nebraska, but that doesn't stop prosecutors from stretching laws to criminalize it.

As someone who has been telling the painful stories of people who suffer as a result of abortion bans for many years now, unfortunately, I know that those stories don’t sway public opinion. You know why? Because if they did, everyone would know the crisis didn’t start last year.

As abortion care expands, we need to refine our language as needed. This Society of Family Planning statement, led by Ushma Upadhyay, PhD, MPH, encourages those in the sexual and reproductive health, rights, and justice fields to use the terms medication abortion and procedural abortion. sciencedirect.com/science/articl…

Abortion ban exceptions for "medical emergencies" fail so many people needing timely care. The wonky legal language is intentionally confusing to navigate. It's not applicable to the way medicine works. People should be able to access abortions they need, regardless of reason.
