Pennine skies, changing with the seasons, the time of day and of course the weather, appear in many of Peter Brook’s paintings, particularly dramatically in ‘A Real Bronté Sunset’, in which the strong red creates a striking contrast with the dark, silhouetted landscape features.

Peter Brook’s urban work serves as a record of the disappearing industrial heritage of the West Riding of Yorkshire, very much the case with ‘Old Mill Huddersfield - Sunday - Drawing Early Morning whilst it’s Quiet’, portraying Newsome Mills, virtually destroyed by fire in 2016.

In his later work Peter Brook often chose an unremarkable landscape feature as the subject of a painting. In ‘A Gap in the Wall (2)’ there is little further detail save for a few clumps of grass and it is the ubiquitous border collie peering out at us which attracts our interest.

You get a lot of Peter Brook for your money with ‘A Lucky Black Cat and a Well-Trained Dog’, which brings together his favourite motifs: a line of washing, the ghost sign on the farmhouse wall, a spectacular evening sky and an obedient Shep, with the addition a feline friend.
