Ok one more time. Tories had the option of a processing centre in France. They said no. Tories could’ve stopped the gangs, stopped the boats but chose not to in favour of causing division & hate. Tories chose to give Rwanda £100ms for sending 1 single person yet here we are

Treating the younger generation with utter contempt for years - in education, training, housing, employment - and then expecting them to do your bidding, is a very strange way to invoke a social contract.

If there is £2.5bn to spend on young people, it could be spent on:
- CAMHS
- SEND
- Supporting children living in poverty
- Fixing the RAAC crisis
- Recruiting and retaining teachers and support staff
- Increasing school budgets so they can afford the basics

There has understandably been a lot on here over the past couple of days about National Service.

So as a historian who actually studies and writes about compulsory military service, here are a few thoughts on the challenges it poses. A quick 🧵 1/

Instead of National Service could we just get Youth Clubs back? There’s nowhere for teens to socialise for cheap, groups of kids are banned from most public areas now and police will 100% be called if kids dared to exist outside of their homes…

Some scenes just seem too perfect for reality - I walk along and feel suspicious, as if I must be in the Truman Show and part of a giant set. I mean, a perfect gate, peeping through a mass of bright buttercups, leading to gently sloping meadows?! Purlease.

Weekend jobs happen every weekend. They don't give you a weekend off once a month to go and work for the Tories. They've definitely not thought this one through have they?

Kemi Badenoch Kemi, I’m sorry but forced national service instead of going straight to Uni isn’t appealing, failing that forced voluntary work isn’t voluntary and when most working class and lower middle class students work at weekends just isn’t appealing however it is intentioned.

Slamming down on young people is not a good look.

Many I know have to work weekends to make ends meet, but you and your government want to use them as unpaid labour for jobs you can’t get others to do.

If you’re 18 you need to register and you need to vote.

Gillian Keegan MP Delivering prescriptions? Who's going to teach them all to drive? Who's going to insure the cars they'd have to use, Who's going to train all these lifeguards?

Come on answer that.

Gillian Keegan MP Another ‘never thought through’ policy. What about young people who are carers? Those who have to work to fund their studies? Those who are at the peak of their sporting career? Most young people cannot afford to volunteer for no pay.

Rt. Hon Ben Wallace Barrie Cummings Mike Jackson My young person is in sixth form and works 2 nights a week. Also volunteers under Duke of Edinburgh scheme. She is not alone - many of our young people do the same.
I don't want any person forced into military service. Remember it was the older generation who ended it in 1960

Rt. Hon Ben Wallace Barrie Cummings Mike Jackson People being ‘made to do something’. Christ. Awful. The entire principal of Conservative / Tories used to be less government. The better this generation of supposed Conservative MPs are sent packing the better. You would be opposing this as nanny state interference if it was
