This by Bench Ansfield, on the nationwide wave of landlord-led arson in the 70s, is among the best history books I’ve read this year. Fills a critical gap that ties redlining to today’s financialized hellscape, with an eye toward our climate change-induced insurance crisis

2) Bottom up histories have been a dominant mode in the history profession for at least four decades. I can't tell if Burns really isn't that well read in the literature or if he just wants to con his audience into thinking he's more innovative than he really is.

For ten consecutive years, Collinwood High School in Cleveland, Ohio was shaken by racial violence. Despite its significance, the Collinwood riots lacked a full historical account, until now. Preorder High School Students Unite! uncpress.org/9781469691824/…

Can't express how much this review of BORN IN FLAMES by Brian Goldstone in the NYT means to me. Goldstone's THERE IS NO PLACE FOR US is among the most important books about housing in the 21st cent. Thank you Brian Goldstone for this stunning review! BORN IN FLAMES is out now!

I discuss this event in my forthcoming book High School Students Unite! Fun fact, I tried to reprint this image in the book, but nobody knew who held the copyright (and fair use is complicated) uncpress.org/9781469691824/…

59 years ago, October 19 1966, a three day boycott of junior and senior high schools in Oakland began, organized by the Ad Hoc Committee for Quality Education. Instead of attending city schools, students, teachers and parents were encouraged to attend the Ad Hoc’s Freedom Schools

Not to be THAT dictionary, but… It’s ‘per se,’ not ‘per say.’ It’s ‘dog-eat-dog world,’ not ‘doggy-dog world.’ It’s ‘hunger pangs,’ not ‘hunger pains.’ It’s ‘one and the same,’ not ‘one in the same.’ It's 'buck naked,' not 'butt naked.'

Despite its vast national reach and early recruitment of secondary school students, the Student Mobilization Committee is infrequently examined in major histories of the antiwar movement. I discuss its high school outreach efforts in my forthcoming book: uncpress.org/9781469691824/…
