Another point similar to the one Matt makes: you can’t operate as if all college sports and the athletes playing those sports are the same. A federal law that tries to apply the same rules to you every college sport probably won’t work.

One of the long time arguments against schools paying college athletes is that it would harm competitive balance. We now have a Carnegie Mellon study that proves this to be not true. In fact, as the study shows, it’s the opposite. Competitive balance has improved.

NCAA is a cartel that suppresses athlete compensation. An antitrust exemption would allow greater exploitation of athletes who generate the value and protect a profitable biz model built on unpaid labor. If anything, stronger antitrust enforcement is needed, not immunity.

With everyone rushing to take sides on a federal college athletics bill, people should consider why bills are being pushed. There’s no push for federal bills when coach/staff salaries skyrocket. So why when athlete comp goes up? And why does athlete comp need to be capped?

Two important points are made here: -Schools can’t claim they don’t have $ to both pay athletes & fund Olympic sports, when they always find $ for things like these huge buyouts. -With the increased importance of paying for athletes, agreeing to these buyouts is malpractice.
