This moment from Police Story is more intense than all of today’s CGI superheroes. And all it took was a criminally dangerous/exploitative working environment and a movie star with a death wish who was raised in indentured servitude to be a martial artist

"Not beautiful images, but necessary images." No piece of audiovisual entertainment has even illustrated Robert Bresson's aphorism more forcefully than "On Cinema at the Cinema"

What is the purpose of art? A. To uplift B. To educate C. To speak truth to power D. To exhibitionistically splatter one's most disgusting thoughts on a slab for the world to see E. To meet/impress girls F. D and E (Ⅎ :ɹǝʍsu∀)

Three anecdotes is a trend. Trends can be articulated into a memeplex. A memeplex can bend our shared perception of reality. Agreeable, easily impressionable, oversocialized people -- almost everyone -- can have their behavior altered by it.

First time in Williamsburg in five months. The pandemic may have changed much, but one thing is eternal: this place is still the epicenter of New York Cool.

Important piece on immediate-result paper tests for COVID. Too often, media describes them as "less accurate." Wrong framework! They're useful in detecting contagiousness—not mere presence of virus which can show up in PCRs for weeks. Exactly what we need. theatlantic.com/health/archive…

.U.S. FDA If you had a tool sitting in front of you that could: 1)Prevent #COVID19 superspreading events but 2)Could not create a formal report & 3)Could not tell whether someone had COVID 1-5 weeks ago Would you support the tool? I would... rapidtests.org

Whoa, Biden says in his speech that his admin will “develop and deploy” rapid tests “with results available immediately.” Sounds exactly like Michael Mina’s plan, which @alexismadrigal and I wrote about last week: theatlantic.com/health/archive…

This is a real concrete error arising from social justice ideology failing to see individuals rather than groups. In general I don't think the public health community's forays into politics and ethics have gone well during all this. slowboring.com/p/vaccinate-el…

Sorry to report that a routine, indifferently directed, entirely unmemorable Republic western of the 1940's is artistically superior to The Greatest Quality Television Series ever produced.

Great fit. Great example of the fact that George was the best classically dressed guy in Seinfeld. George wore so many wool sport coats, OCBDs with great collar rolls. The ties weren't always my exact taste, but great in their own fantastically 90s way.
