#FOTW Leiopelma waitomoensis - As part of our project 'Pepeketua of Aotearoa' NZFrogs had the opportunity to commission paleoart of New Zealand's extinct frogs. Waitomo frog was New Zealand's largest frog, reaching a snout vent length of 10cm!

#FOTW Gastrotheca cornuta- Horned marsupial frogs have a remarkable reproductive cycle. Females release eggs for the male to fertilize them, but once the eggs are fertilized, males place them in a pouch on the female's backs were frogs develop without a free-living tadpole stage!

#FOTW Phyllonastes dicaprioi - or DiCaprio’s leaflitter frog was recently descrbied as part of a comprehensive phylogenetics study in Ecaudor. The Ecuadorian research team named this frog in tribute to DiCaprio’s environmental work!

#FOTW Gastrophryne carolinensis - eastern narrow mouth toads are a little cuties found across the Southeastern USA. Common throughout their range, males call from temporary & permanent water bodies including ponds, drainage ditches or otherwise!

#FOTW Limnonectes dabanus - are ground dwelling frogs from the rainforests of Cambodia & Veitnam. Female dabanus fanged frogs look pretty normal, but the males look freaky! Males frogs have a head which is over half their body length and, adorned with a large 'caruncle.'

#FOTW Nymphargus anomalus - Napo cochran frogs are known from only four localities in the Ecuadorian Andes! These are glass-frogs, but unusually, have a tan-brown colour on the dorsal surface versus the green seen in most other species.

#FOTW Atelopus spumarius - is a stunning 'harlequin toad' widely distributed across South America's Amazon Basin. Known as the pebas spadefoot toad, this frog represents a terrible 'species complex.' Pictured here are individuals from Ecuador, Brazil, Colombia and, Peru!

#FOTW Pelobates fuscus - are fossorial, spending most of their time underground. Common spadefoot toads are named by the spade-like appendages on their back feet which they use to dig backwards into the soil!

#FOTW Telmatobufo bullocki - is one of four species in the genus 'Telmatobufo' all endemic to Chile. These frogs inhabit temperate beech forests along fast-flowing streams; they are extremely rare and, are threatened by the ongoing expansion of forestry plantations.

#FOTW Zhangixalus schlegelii - The Schlegel's green tree frog is endemic to Japan. They're commonly found in rice paddy fields. Eggs are laid in an underground nest where they are mixed with a special aerated foam which provide moisture and oxygen for the developing eggs.

#FOTW Pipa pipa - the Surinam toad, is a frog from nightmares! Found across much of tropicla South America, these famous frogs incubate eggs in honeycomb-like deppressions on the backs of females, the skin to grows over until the young erupt after 4 - 5 months !

#FOTW Litoria ewingii - Brown tree frogs are one of three introduced frogs species in Aotearoa New Zealand! Thought to be released only once, by W. Perkins in Greymouth, these frogs spread across almost the entire country including the North, South and, Stewart Island.

#FOTW Amazophrynella minuta - is a teeny tiny species of toad with a stunning orange belly, which lives on the rainforest floor across much of the Amazon Basin. It can often be found near streams or the temporary water bodies where it breeds during the rainy season.

Brown tree frogs are generalist species which breed all year round and, are freeze tolerant! Research by Isy Potbury as part of her MSc looks to understand their alpine ecology. Isy's research will compare the habitat and diet of brown tree frogs and endemic cascade geckos.
