One of the delights of a smaller Fringe, which just can’t happen in Edinburgh, is seeing a show purely because it’s on at a time you’re free - and it turning out to be a gem. So it is with The Improbable Tale Of Kitty Jay, a folk-tale-inspired three-hander at the Town Hall.

I have to be careful about spoilers here, because a lot of the magic is in working out exactly what you’re watching and what the back story might be. But it’s about the stories we tell ourselves, why we tell them, and the comforts they bring. All done with lightness and humour.

It’s an enchanting play with some moments of beauty, and an underlying message of warmth and hope that’s still with me now. Deftly written, impeccably paced and lovingly performed. The perfect way to draw a close to my time at Durham Fringe Festival.
