In a year when the sound category is won by a movie with incredibly ambitious sonic storytelling, it’s pretty sad that the introduction to the category only focuses on dialogue as the reason why sound is important in movies. Film sound is so much more than the spoken word.

This is good. It’s very very good. And I say that as a scruffy, penniless working class herbert from Balsall Heath in Birmingham who made good. And made a movie about Nureyev. And fulfilled a lifelong dream of flying to bloody Space. And Votes Labour. 🌹

A truly unique film: erudite and absorbing. It captures the energies of James, Blackwood and Machen and resolves them in a powerful, 21st century way. An unknown gem.

Sometimes you’re having a bit of a day and then the director you most admire goes and says something nice about a film you made.
