The painted chamber, the Commandery Worcester. These 15thc depictions of saints and on the ceiling the Trinity were rediscovered under whitewash in 1935. It is believed that when the building was a hospital, this was the room where the terminally ill were brought to die.

Back home from a weekend in York. A city that may have the densest concentration of surviving mediaeval crownpost roofs in the country (that's anecdotal rather than data-driven). Here's probably the most famous & accessible of them at The House of Trembling Madness on Stonegate.

The Oxford Arms Inn in London was originally built in the 16th century and rebuilt following the Great Fire of 1666. It was still occupied when photographed here in 1875 but was threatened by demolition. It was pulled down 3 years later, making way for a range of new houses.

Fascinating artefact. Can’t help but wonder about the interaction between the #vikings and the people who already lived there. Presumably an interesting exchange of technologies and ideas.

More from Château de Salignac. They're planning to bring another room back to the 15th century and these are some of the options... Put your sunglasses on! Does this fit the image of castles we're shown on tv and in films?

On 19 August, 1745, Prince Charles Edward Stuart raised his standard at Glenfinnan. But the #Jacobite Rising nearly didn't happen. Read about the setbacks and surprises on that day 280 years ago at historiamag.com/raising-jacobi…

When I first visited Saint-Germain-en-Laye some years ago the church was closed, so I was unable to pay my respects at the final resting place of King James II and VII. I corrected that today
