Can we improve causal concepts? I argue that the concept of actual causation is a multi-purpose tool. We use it for selecting interventions and for ascribing responsibility. Improving the concept for one purpose may have bad consequences for the other. link.springer.com/article/10.100…

Enno Fischer (Ruhr-Universität Bochum) discusses James Woodward's functional approach to causation that integrates descriptive & normative aspects. What do we want from causal reasoning? link.springer.com/article/10.100… #philsci

"We get this instinct that true science must start from a firm foundation. Time and again that's what I see NOT happening in the practice of science. We start from where we stand. The foundation is never indubitable, it's provisional" Hasok Chang out now! thehpspodcast.buzzsprout.com/2180146/141399…

The driver failed to brake, but the brakes were broken anyway. What’s the cause of the accident? See my new article in The EJPS for a discussion of the heuristic roles that causal models can play for solving such legal cases with complex causal structure. doi.org/10.1007/s13194…

"Excited Delirium Syndrome" is a problematic diagnosis when applied to deaths in contexts of police violence. In this new paper Saana Jukola and I analyze the epistemic conditions of forensic medicine that make the diagnosis so problematic: sciencedirect.com/science/articl…
