Love this online tool! The "De-Jargonizer" tells you how accessible your work is to non-scientists. Just input your text and let it do the rest. scienceandpublic.com Thanks to Technion Israel for developing this #scicomm #sciencetelling resource.

Have some extra time? Check out National Geographic's free online conservation course called "Exploring Conservation." Learn how the ocean works, how wildlife species are conserved, and more. And did I mention, it's free! 😀 natgeo.org/exploringconse… National Geographic Society

WIFM is one of my favorite sayings in #scicomm. It’s an acronym for “what’s in it for me?” Figuring out how your work connects with people is key to getting them to care about it. How does what you do intersect with their life, their family, or what they do? #sciencetelling

Once you have someone interested in your work, have an answer to the question “how can I help?” A call to action can be signing a petition, visiting a website, making a donation, and more. Think about a tangible action that others can easily act on. #sciencetelling #scicomm

When you give a talk, begin with a “hot start.” This could be a provocative question or fact, a humorous anecdote, or powerful phrase/statement. The key is to make a memorable first impression and capture your audience’s attention from the first moment. #sciencetelling #scicomm

Jargon is a barrier to communication. This includes scientific terms, acronyms, or other words that are only used in your line of work/study. Use the De-Jargonizer tool to check how accessible your work is scienceandpublic.com #sciencetelling #scicomm

Like newspaper headlines, short, to-the-point sentences are great for interviews and talks. But speaking in headlines, or soundbites, takes some practice. Learn from one of the best science communicators, Neil deGrasse Tyson youtube.com/watch?v=lLT1xp… #sciencetelling #scicomm

Images can be more powerful than words. Why? Some say the human brain processes images 60,000 times faster than text. Check out sites like unsplash.com for free eye-catching photos to make that first connection with your audience #sciencetelling #scicomm
