Yesterday, some of the Hematopolitics team visited the Blood Donor Centre in Leeds (117 The Headrow). The brilliant team showed us the ins and outs of blood donation and treated us to a special tour of the building. We even got a free biscuit as part of our visit!

Working on a video about historical smells means overcoming my phobia of mannequins by getting up close and personal with John the butcher at work 🤢

Delighted to share that my new article is now out with Cultural and Social History! It asks what made a shrine legitimate in early modern Catholicism arguing for the vital role of emotional practices for establishing spiritual certainty. tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.10…

I'm looking to share some of my new research on the moral and medical dimensions of breastfeeding and breast cancer (1600-1900). If you know of any seminar series, conferences, or societies that might be interested in having me present, please let me know!

Spending my Monday researching the possibility of using smells to diagnose cancer. Body odour remains a powerful tool for identifying and treating serious illnesses, even if not perceptible to the human nose. verywellhealth.com/what-cancer-sm…

Is there such a thing as a medical humanities ECR/PGR community or WIP network? does anyone know of any groups that come under this purview?

A quick update for the people still on here - in October, I'll be joining Durham Institute for Medical Humanities as a Bridging Fellow in Medical Humanities! I'll be working in the Affective Experiences Lab, where I'll be developing my research on the sensescapes of cancer, 1700-1950.

In other news, I've also been awarded a Visiting Early Career Research Fellowship at the John Rylands Research Institute in Manchester, and today, I signed my contract with Manchester University Press to write my book on Plague and the Senses in Early Modern London!

A very niche request - does anyone have any references to people 'sucking' poison/disease/infection out of someone's body? Looking particularly at 17/18c. Thanks!
