8 months ago, these rooms were empty and I didn’t know anything about fish husbandry. Today I am running experiments in the amazing Brixham Laboratory to calibrate indices of growth for juvenile sole, for my PhD. What an amazing journey, and it is just the beginning.. stay tuned !🐟

Just finished entering data for 2024... this small net has now been towed for 🏆>100km 🏆by Biological and Marine Sciences staff + Marine Biology UPSU students University of Plymouth @ beaches in SW England. Bravo net & all for 7yr effort: LT data on fish habitat use, & how / why fish populations vary is valuable.

An interesting start to the first University of Plymouth #seabass expedition of September 2024! Some unexpected encounters, plenty of mud, and a bass on the first day! #FHRU

September #seabass expedition 1 day 2 was an unusual one University of Plymouth! A bumper catch of mullet on the Fowey, the return of the singular bass, and visit from a colleague Environment Agency to talk #mNCEA! #FHRU

September #seabass expedition 1 day 3 University of Plymouth! A lovely day on the Erme with many mullet (I'm starting to see a theme), gobies, a fabulous sandeel, and a whopping 4 bass! University of Plymouth #FHRU

September #seabass expedition 1 day 4 was the busiest yet University of Plymouth! 3 sites with bumper catches, plenty of mullet, sandeels, sand smelt and gobies, plus two more bass and some really funky weather 🌈#FHRU

September #seabass expedition 1 ended on a muddy note University of Plymouth! No bass, but flatfish, mullet, gobies and a cucumbery visitor! Also, there's a fish in photo 1- can you spot it? 🔍 #FHRU

September #seabass expedition 2 day 1 University of Plymouth! Tragically, no bass at Torpoint today, but plenty of mullet and sand smelt! #FHRU

September #seabass expedition 2 day 2 University of Plymouth! A long one today with some massive tides, but well worth the effort for more than a hundred bass (plus some goby ID in the dark) 🌕#FHRU

September #seabass expedition 2 day 3 University of Plymouth! The south Devon Avon finished with lots of mullet and coffee, then some exciting nets on the Erme with a good number of bass! #FHRU

September #seabass expedition 2 day 4 University of Plymouth! A slight change of cast didn't stop us having fun on the Tamar, with a bass and plenty of gobies (as requested on the drive to site) #FHRU

September #seabass expedition 2 day 5 University of Plymouth! Finishing strong (if soggy) on the Erme with another 7 bass and plenty of mullet, plus some sandeels and sand smelt! #FHRU

My second PhD field expedition was a success, with stunning sunsets, plenty of juvenile fish (although not as many sole as expected 🤔), and amazing students. Thanks to Ben Ciotti, Devon & Severn IFCA , Biological and Marine Sciences and @ARIES_DTP for their support 🐟 Now, off on holidays !
