This is an excellent piece.

A strong counterpoint to the people instructing us that politics is little more than a zero sum game.

By making attacking refugees the core of their message, the Tories badly misjudged the public mood.

One poll shows that, if an election was held today, they’d be left with 13 MPs.

People want a hopeful, unifying vision. That’s what Labour should offer.

✅We need policies which focus on a fairer system.
✅Policies which boost the whole country through showing the positives of migration.
✅A system which doesn't drive people into debt.
✅We need a system which doesn't scapegoat migrants, and instead helps everyone flourish.

Come on Labour. Lead the way here. You’ve said No to Rwanda, you’ve said no to the Illegal Migration Act. And your polling shows people support you in this.

A fair system, with safe access, that treats people well. Simple, do-able, winnable.

If Labour want to get this right before the election, they need to sit down with experts including those who have been through the system. Labour need a robust policy based on evidence - just like every other manifesto policy.

Conservative policy is to deport asylum seekers to Rwanda.

Labour stands against the Rwanda plan & will clear the backlog trapped in limbo by processing asylum claims.

Polls & election results are clear which the public want. Lab has everything to lose if they lose their nerve.

All this cruelty is not really about making migrants disappear - they know perfectly bloody well they can't do that.

It's just about getting you to vote for them, and vote your rights to protect you from their abuses at the ECHR away too, all the better.

Refugees will not be made to disappear.

Around the world, when every safe, rich country says 'not here, not here' it doesn't remove the need for those people to find a safe home.

Australia is the worst possible example for Europe to follow. It's not too late to change course.

Nothing could encapsulate how badly 'deterrence', cruelty, and 'offshore solutions' have failed than the Australian example.

Nothing could demonstrate how revolting our own version is than Rwandan refugees being the ones to make the desperate journey.

After 10 years of 'offshoring', incalculable suffering & human rights abuses, & billions of Aus$ spent, the boats never stopped in Australia.

Because refugees didn't stop needing safety.

They turn some back, but smugglers can always adapt, as long as people have no alternative.
