UK & EU refugees & migration. LGBT+, feminism & generalised incoherent ranting to boot. I do research & campaigns. Dehumanisation is not a line, it is a circle.

Thrilled to have won this Amnesty Award for our investigation exposing how Afghan commandos who were paid & trained by the UK have been abandoned by Britain - and the harm they’ve faced

tessa rodgers To be clear, I don't agree with the decision to admit Natalie Elphicke. Labour is a broad church, but there should be limits. I am deeply concerned by Natalie’s past comments and I’m unconvinced that her politics have changed sufficiently for her to represent our party.

Zoe Gardner With just about six months left before Tories have to call the general election, all they have left now is a desperate attempt to minimise losses to the ever more extreme right (Zoe Gardner). Full piece👇

The Tories gave us migrant hatred.

They gave us vans, handcuffs, threats & division.

We voted. They lost.

Will Labour listen?

Braverman can rant all she likes: the anti-immigration blitz failed to save Conservative seats in the local elections, and won't work in the general election either.

Will Labour learn from this? Zoe Gardner (1/2) 🧵

The House of Lords will shortly start a debate led by Michael German on how the Illegal Migration Act ends decision making in the asylum process, shutting tens of thousands out of the system. Our Refugee Council 🧡 analysis found more than 100k people could be impacted by the end of 2024

This is an excellent piece.

A strong counterpoint to the people instructing us that politics is little more than a zero sum game.

By making attacking refugees the core of their message, the Tories badly misjudged the public mood.

One poll shows that, if an election was held today, they’d be left with 13 MPs.

People want a hopeful, unifying vision. That’s what Labour should offer.

âś…We need policies which focus on a fairer system.
âś…Policies which boost the whole country through showing the positives of migration.
âś…A system which doesn't drive people into debt.
âś…We need a system which doesn't scapegoat migrants, and instead helps everyone flourish.

Come on Labour. Lead the way here. You’ve said No to Rwanda, you’ve said no to the Illegal Migration Act. And your polling shows people support you in this.

A fair system, with safe access, that treats people well. Simple, do-able, winnable.

If Labour want to get this right before the election, they need to sit down with experts including those who have been through the system. Labour need a robust policy based on evidence - just like every other manifesto policy.

I am hearing Labour has a migration/borders policy announcement tomorrow.

My piece on why the lesson from the local elections is that anti-migrant policies lose.

Labour is in a position to bring real change from division & chaos, with a hopeful vision thelead.uk/migrant-baitin…

Conservative policy is to deport asylum seekers to Rwanda.

Labour stands against the Rwanda plan & will clear the backlog trapped in limbo by processing asylum claims.

Polls & election results are clear which the public want. Lab has everything to lose if they lose their nerve.

'I survived investigation torture .. but I've stared death in the face!'

Syrian detainees in Lebanon are deported to Assad to be tortured to death!

They need:
1. International Protection.
2. Deportation to safe areas outside Assad's control.
3. UN & NGO visits.

All this cruelty is not really about making migrants disappear - they know perfectly bloody well they can't do that.

It's just about getting you to vote for them, and vote your rights to protect you from their abuses at the ECHR away too, all the better.

Refugees will not be made to disappear.

Around the world, when every safe, rich country says 'not here, not here' it doesn't remove the need for those people to find a safe home.

Australia is the worst possible example for Europe to follow. It's not too late to change course.

Nothing could encapsulate how badly 'deterrence', cruelty, and 'offshore solutions' have failed than the Australian example.

Nothing could demonstrate how revolting our own version is than Rwandan refugees being the ones to make the desperate journey.

After 10 years of 'offshoring', incalculable suffering & human rights abuses, & billions of Aus$ spent, the boats never stopped in Australia.

Because refugees didn't stop needing safety.

They turn some back, but smugglers can always adapt, as long as people have no alternative.

Reeling after catching up today with wonderful Aussie colleagues ASRC.

Tories here lie that Australia stopped the boats by sending refugees to offshore detention & we'll do the same with Rwanda...

Tell me why a boat of 5 Rwandan asylum seekers arrived in Australia yesterday?
