PM’s speech was long as usual. Heavy on Atmanirbhar and swadeshi. Reiterated no comprise on agri and dairy sector. Major announcement was GST 2.0 by Diwali. Setting up a task force for next gen reforms Nationwide defence shield by 2035 with offensive capabilities.

This is a very challenging program. I doubt we have the technology or the money for it to be comprehensive to defend every city/town. They will all need ballistic missile defence and we have hundreds of such because of our population.

He said it will all be done in India. But, we are a very large country and I don’t think we can defend every city from drone and ballistic missiles attack. Ambitious program that will take away a lot of money from other capabilities. We are short in basic capabilities like

Build deterrence capabilities and work the doctrine so that attacks on cities can be averted — especially ones that cause mass casualties. In India’s case as a nuclear weapons power, this can be done with change in doctrine. Something I’ve talked about for many years.

Is this the result of Munir’s statement of targeting India from East to West? If yes, his one statement that didn’t cost Pakistan anything, is going to cost India a lot in treasure.

Iron Dome or a similar weapons system is NOT suitable for India. Iron Dome was designed to counter arty shells and rockets. People have to stop thinking that it’s an all in one defence system against everything thrown at it.

Define major population centre.

Instead of defensive shield, India must invest in all kinds of offensive capabilities that strike fear in the mind of the enemy and force it to think a million times before provoking. Defensive shield is not easy, not comprehensive, and MASSIVE BLOODY EXPENSIVE!

Israel being small in size and years of experience in developing defensive shield could not fully defend itself. It needed the US as backup and even then we saw its defences penetrated. The short conflict with Iran cost it billions of dollars.

Defence investment has to increase. But we prioritise. Having air defence system is one thing, but nation wide shield is something else—as it appears from the statement. We are short in major offensive weapons. Fighter jets, naval platforms, force multipliers etc.

Petrol, diesel and daru are unlikely to come under GST as the states will not give up the only remaining major revenue sources under their control.
