This month marks the historic 50th anniversary of the end of the Vietnam War. A movie on the Cu Chi Tunneling Warfare, “Địa Đạo” (2025), is hitting the cinemas soon and expected to gain record-high viewer figures amid nationalist fanfare for revolutionary movies since 2024.

This is indeed my favourite anecdote in my research. I like it so much that I loop back to it at the end of the book. In the Sino-Vietnamese relationship, what is seemingly new is often old.
