An extremely rare interaction, valproate interacts with pivmecillinam increasing the risk of carnitine depletion, resulting in hyperammonaemic encephalopathy. See more info in the BNF: bnf.nice.org.uk/interactions/p… All ADRS should be reported to the Yellow Card Scheme #PharmacoQuiz

Penicillin allergy is reported in approx 10% of the population, often this means cephalosporins are avoided too. Which of the following cephalosporins share a similar structure to penicillin and is therefore more likely to show cross-reactivity? #PharmacoQuiz ⭐️⭐️⭐️

The correct answer to last weeks #PharmacoQuiz was cefalexin, it shares the same R1 side chain as penicillin therefore we need to be more aware of cross-sensitivity reactions, read more here: sps.nhs.uk/wp-content/upl…

The correct answer to last weeks #PharmacoQuiz was amlodipine! A monitoring plan and counselling on potential side effects can sign-post patients to seek advice if this side effect occurs

The answer to last weeks quiz was codeine, which should be avoided in children under 12 due to respiratory side effects. The BNF for children is an excellent resource as is Medicines for childre: medicinesforchildren.org.uk #ADRs #medicinesafety

The correct answer to our last #PharmacoQuiz was omeprazole, if taking omeprazole for over 3 months magnesium levels may fall, this may present as tiredness, dizziness and confusion, see more information here: nhs.uk/medicines/omep….

Get involved with the Yellow Card Biobank! The goal is to improve understanding of how a patient’s genetic makeup may increase their risk of ADRs, to get involved report any side effects to DOACs or allopurinol without delay, the MHRA may then contact you

The MHRA have published a #DrugSafety Update highlighting a possible link between #sodiumvalproate use and developmental delays in the their children gov.uk/drug-safety-up…

The MHRA are looking to recruit patients into the #YellowCard #Biobank for severe bleeding reactions with #DOACs and severe skin reactions with #allopurinol Please see this #DSU for details of how you can help gov.uk/drug-safety-up…

If you observe any ADRs to allopurinol or direct oral anticoagulants then reporting them on a Yellow Card may result in the case being involved in the Yellow Card Biobank. This is an important project aimed at increasing our knowledge on the genetic basis of ADRs.

This #WorldPatientSafetyDay we'd like to remind all that adverse effects to medicines may mimic or mask symptoms of other health issues, making it harder to diagnose. Always report any suspected adverse drug reactions yellowcard.mhra.gov.uk
