Climbing and research frustrate and reward me in a very similar way... Maybe our brain just gets used to the high-risk, high-reward type of stimulations 🧠

Having the first graduate student in the lab is like a magic. Got actual things made and experiments done - so happy to see our research is growing from baby steps. Writing down the date for those plates is when I realized that I came to this country eight years ago from today 😊

To setup the CO2 pipeline and the fly anesthesia stations in my lab, I drilled a hole in my lab ceiling and stole a portable microscope from the @Annika_Barber lab today - I have never felt so empowered in my life.

When I left Michigan, I thought I would never do such a thing called ice climbing. It turns out there are many places in the East that are even colder than the Great Lakes area, especially this weekend ❄️

Our fly kitchen is functioning (finally) and we nailed our first batch of cooking! Definitely a teamwork and I'm so grateful for working with awesome students in our lab :) My summer as a trainee in the fly kitchen back in Michigan has paid off 🧑🏻‍🍳

Actually no science for me. Just endless worry. My biggest fear right now is like what if I didn't install the CO2 pipeline correctly and blow the whole building away. Lol.

One of the things we are interested in the lab is how food choices shape the longevity and health of animals. Today is the first time that my students made the food choice plates that allow animals to choose between sugar and protein during their entire life...

Our Drosophila incubators finally arrived after six months. They are …bigger than I imagined. The first one got stuck in the front door of our lab cause the door knob was on the way. We are lucky that our back door has a normal design so all the incubators jammed through.

10:30 pm - still in the lab waiting for the last two flies to die in a desiccation challenge (my student set up the experiment at 6 am in the morning ). Thought the last two should have died hours ago. Reminds me of so many good old days 😆
