A young black director from Oakland California with the thickest bay area accent you will ever hear just broke the Oscar record for most nominations in the history of the academy with his movie. I can’t tell you how inspiring that is

part of what elevates Sinners to me is that it made people excited about actually going to the movies. Barbenhiemer was fun but most saw it once. people saw Sinners 4 and 5 times in multiple formats. they engaged with the *medium* and not just the movie. that's beautiful!

Some of these tweets about how Sinners is just a "fun popcorn movie" with nothing deeper going on remind me of the story Billie Holiday told, about a white woman at one of her shows saying: "why don't you sing that one *sexy* song, you know, the one about the fruit!"

There's a thing happening... where social media is highlighting Black men without VERY particular fundamental skills. I don't want to slight the men themselves, because individually they're doing amazing and should be applauded. But the pattern should noted...

This is harmful. For a number of reasons. Calling out a person who used their immense platform to spew (and practice) racism is not a "purity test", its accountability. Beyond that it minimizes not only the act but the people impacted. Saying things like this trivializes hateful

We’re being desensitized. Don’t lose your empathy. Watching people die on your phone isn’t normal. Remember to take breaks, take care of yourselves, your loved ones and your community.

I don’t care how great her braids look or how long she attended beauty school to learn the skill, I HATE how they are constantly being recognized and rewarded for doing what we’ve been doing for generations. No more cookout invitations!
