Breaking News! Code Yikes! In case you haven't been paying attention, global sea-surface temperatures have been spiking for the last week and may soon set a new all-time record. Massively overheated oceans are not healthy for children and other living things.

So how is the fight against global warming going? Well, compared to predictions made 30 years ago, we have slightly slowed the rate at which carbon dioxide is accumulating in the atmosphere. Technically that's progress, I guess, but we need it to stop increasing entirely.

Last week, the US Department of Agriculture all but finished a decades long, cruel bipartisan project: Speeding up the kill lines at America's slaughterhouses. The draft rules have received almost no media attn but will impact hundreds of millions of workers & animals.

Here's the reasoning for the #Melissa upgrade to 165 knots. Very solid and maybe even conservative IMO. It's a blend of the obs and satellite estimates, and also accounts for undersampling (we didn't fly in the eastern eyewall on the final flight, and the Air Force mission only

Thornton just escaped an absolute tragedy thanks for firefighters. This seriously could have been the Marshall fire 2.0 had the winds been stronger. Unreal stop despite losing a lot of vehicles and a couple small structures at what appears to be a salvage yard. Amazing stop

China added more solar capacity in 2025 than the United States has built, total, in its entire history. We are not building solar fast enough in America.

2/26/26 10:50am: As expected, the ~1.7" increase in SWE* from this week's rain was temporary and exited through the bottom of the snowpack. In fact, the warm storm melted some of the snowpack, so we are now at 19" rather than the 19.7" at the end of last week's snowfall. 1/2

Exclusive: Pollution from U.S. power plants rose last year, a rare uptick in an otherwise long-term downward trend, partly because of more coal being burned to generate electricity on.wsj.com/4qUc8C5

Windy conditions and low humidity, paired with very dry vegetation, continue today, and NWS Boulder has issued another Red Flag Warning. To mitigate wildfire risk, we have implemented Enhanced Powerline Safety Settings (EPSS), which makes power lines more sensitive and can stop
