Ion's garden bug hotel has had a visitor! The canes in this hotel are perfect for red mason bees, who line the individual 'cells' with mud and pollen and later lay eggs in them 🐝

Check out these heart-shaped leaves of black bryony, climbing their way up a hedgerow. Did you know that this species always twines to the left? The plant grows from a root called a tuber, which can grow underground to up to 60cm in width!

Mousetail! Caroline spotted hundreds of plants at this week in one of our fallow plots. This plant is classed as vulnerable and one of the species which make this site nationally important for arable flora. As the seeds ripen it resembles a mouse’s scaly tail 🌱

Although they're not technically native, rabbits have been in the UK so long that they're a key grazing animal in some habitats. At , we've created a series of refuges for them, so they can move across fields more freely whilst being protected from predators 🐰

It’s garden spiderling time 💚
These tiny yellow dots are the young of garden cross spiders and hang around together for protection during their first few days of life. It will take them two years before they can have youngsters of their own.

Recently at , bird recorder Craig Reed led a course for our volunteers about heathland birds. He discussed how to identify them, what habitats they look for and the surveying techniques used to monitor them. It was a great session with a fantastic turnout! 😊

Our colleague Wendy noticed robins nesting in the corner of her garden. So she waited until the youngsters had fledged and dispersed before looking for the nest; the adults had built their nest in unused plant pots that had been left on their side tucked into a shrub. 💚

Wow! Our colleague Steve was surprised to find ’s first beautiful demoiselle on an early morning bird survey. It's a species of fast flowing small rivers and streams but is spreading fast, using places like Smite as a stepping stone as they move across country!😊

Hawthorn is hailed as May-tree for a reason! At this time of year, hedgerows burst to life with creamy white blossom. This thorny shrub supports a whole host of wildlife, including hawthorn shieldbugs, wood mice and slow-worms 🐍
