Often famous books are found to be absolutely rubbish by modern audiences. I liked The Great Gatsby but it's too famous to be judged on its own merits now. On the other hand Wuthering Heights is famous & utter drivel of the worst sort. 32/34 book club readers who read it agreed.

It was a gloriously funny meeting. Interestingly the only two people (out of 34) who enjoyed it were English Teachers. Wuthering Heights is the ultimate "I liked it because everyone else likes it" book.

The Great Gatsby was enjoyed by almost all the people at Wimbledon Book Club who read it but a common view was it was now too famous to be read and enjoyed on its own merits, separate from its reputation as a 'great book'. Wuthering Heights was near universally hated tho.
